A Creative 2 Day Workshop with Pete Monaghan

22 July 2026 10:00 to 16:00
23 July 2026 10:00 to 16:00

We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented artist Pete Monaghan lead a two-day creative workshop, designed to break away from conventional drawing and the restraints of formal illustration. Together, we will delve into the world of loose lines, creative collage, and innovative mark-making.

Over the course of the workshop, you will explore alternative ways of communicating what we see. Simple, hands-on exercises will encourage new ways of analysing and representing the landscape, drawing on architectural and industrial elements to help convey scale, proportion, and perspective.

Working outdoors, we will collate reference material in sketchbooks to support ongoing mixed-media exploration. Back in the studio, paintings may be enhanced through the use of collaged maps, cardboard, coffee cups, and a wealth of other found and recycled materials—everyday objects that spark fresh ideas and take the work in unexpected directions.

Caisson Gardens is rich in industrial heritage, shaped by the Somerset Coal Canal. The house sits at the summit of a dramatic flight of 22 locks, constructed from vast blocks of Bath stone. Now free of water, these remarkable structures tell their story through the elegant lines of their walls and the unusual shapes they carve into the landscape, creating a unique form of living land art.

Throughout the workshop, the emphasis will be firmly on exploration—gathering new ideas, revising our perception of landscape, and developing fresh creative techniques rather than producing finished work. We will also consider how contemporary, sustainable garden design can influence and inform our practice.

The day will include coffee on arrival, a light lunch and ending with a well-earned cup of tea and delicious homemade cake!

Wednesday 22nd & Thursday 23rd July 2026 – 10.00am – 4.00pm £400
